Grain salads are popping up all over the place—from leading European food-retailers, to fast-growing cafeteria-style chains in Southern California. One prominent culinary magazine calls this recent phenomenon the ‘healthiest new food trend.’ So, what’s in a grain salad, anyway? As you might guess, it’s a selection of whole grains, blended with some combination of nuts, seeds, fresh veggies, and dried fruit. It’s obviously no secret that Trader Joe’s Nutty Grain Side Salad errs on the nutty side.
Plenty of roasted Virginia peanuts, California pistachios, and pumpkin seeds, mingle with edamame in a milieu of two “ancient grains”—namely, Red Quinoa from Bolivia and spelt. Tiny, diced carrots—matching the size of the spelt—add to the hearty texture. A light dressing of pomegranate juice, lime juice, soy sauce, honey, and vinegar, helps maintain the overall sweet-tart balance, while aromatic hints of ginger, garlic, and sweet chilies lend a distinctly Thai twist.
By itself, this salad makes a satisfying and nutritious meal. The 8-ounce package contains a good dose of Vitamin C and a high percentage of your daily requirement of Fiber, Iron, and Vitamin A. And, with all those nuts in the mix, you’ll get about half the protein you need each day. Spoon some into large, crisp iceberg lettuce leaves for an appetizer. Or, serve it alongside some baked ‘fillet of sole’ or tilapia.
Trendy eats like these are often sold at upwardly trending prices. We like to stay hip to new and interesting bites, but not at just any cost. Focused, as always, on offering great values, we’re selling each eight ounce container of our Nutty Grain Side Salad for $3.49.
