At first, it might seem a little silly to call this new Trader Joe’s deli item Sausage-less Sausage. Clearly, these are not “sausages”—at least, not in the traditional sense.
We could’ve called them, “Savory Soy Protein Cylinders,” since they are fundamentally made of textured soy protein. What stopped us from making this naming choice is the same thing that stopped us when we created our popular Italian Sausage-less Sausages. It’s that Trader Joe’s Wild Rice & Mushroom “Sausages” really look like meat sausages. They are light brown with visible bits of wild rice and mushrooms in a traditionally, tube-shaped link.
Not only do they look like sausages, they also have a savory taste that recalls meat sausages. They are firm-textured with good chew, revealing rich mushroom flavor and aromatic notes of rosemary. If anything, they should be called Sausage-more! When it comes to preparing them, they grill up or pan fry just like—you guessed it—meat sausages.
At just $3.49 for the 12 ounce, four-link package, what we should’ve called them was Trader Joe’s Pay-less Sausages. But, we didn’t. Find these seasonal Wild Rice & Mushroom Sausages-less Sausages in our refrigerated deli case, but only through January.
