January 8th—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.
Sour cream likely began as an accident. We can imagine the pleasant surprise when that chef or home chef discovered this fortuitous food creation. We know that by the middle of the 20th century it had become a staple in American kitchens, and it's been a staple at Trader Joe's for as long as we've had a dairy case. It's versatile, delicious, and at Trader Joe's, a great value.
Trader Joe's Sour Cream is made with milk from cows not treated with the synthetic growth hormone rBST, and it contains no synthetic colors, artificial flavors, or preservatives of any kind. We've tested ours against the full fat sour creams you'll find in other stores, and we’'e consistently found ours to be thicker and creamier, with a bit more "tang" than the competition. Use a dollop (or two!) on baked potatoes, with Mexican-style dishes from nachos to fajitas, or as a base for Trader Joe's Onion Dip Mix.
You'll find 16 ounce containers of Trader Joe's Sour Cream in our dairy cases for $1.79 each. That's no sale price -- that's our price every day, the same price we've had since August, 2011. It's also proof that good things do often come with very small prices.
