Turmeric

February 3rd—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

Turmeric has been used for thousands of years for culinary and medical purposes, and is often used as a natural food dye (it imparts a golden-yellow hue - more turmeric equals more color).  It lends foods an earthy, mildly peppery flavor - it's a staple in Indian cuisine.  Try tossing it with our Cauliflower Florets before roasting them - they'll finish with a golden hue and a unique flavor you'll find yourself craving.  Turmeric is also known for its potential health benefits, and is often added to healing teas in both Chinese and Indian traditional medicine.

We've written about the spice business a number of times in the past.  The short version is, spices don't have to be as expensive as the big supermarkets would have you believe.  Sure, some of them are expensive to source and produce, but the vast majority of spices are relatively inexpensive, and are simply marked up an obscene amount because shoppers have been convinced that it's supposed to be that way.  Not so at Trader Joe's.  We take a good mark up on our spices - about the same as we do for everything else - and are still able to offer them to you at excellent value prices.

How excellent?  We're selling each two ounce jar of Trader Joe's Turmeric for $1.99, a fantastic value, every day.
